To give our son Jonathan a positive experience as he has lived with type 1 diabetes for nearly 10 years of his life, He is nearly 14 now.
Hawke's Bay
We would love to take our youngest son Jonathan to the U.S.A. to experience a youth camp especially for those with type 1 diabetes. The costs needed are for airfares for Jonathan, Brad and myself (parents) We would take Jonathan to camp and then have a wee break ourselves before picking Jonathan back up for the return flight home. This is an experience Jonathan can't have in N.Z. Being parents of a child with a chronic disease, you don't get many breaks, so this would be wonderful not only for Jonathan but also for us. We would need to be with Jonathan on the flights anyway.
I am Jonathan's very proud mum. It breaks my heart everyday to see what Jonathan has to do to just keep alive, but he never grumbles.
Why camp? 24 February 2015
Some people has asked why it is so important for Jonathan to go to camp. He will not only be with peers who have to live with what he has to, but he will also be given some vital equipping skills to learn how to live with diabetes. The camp is a medical one. He is now managing his care all himself, with us overseeing. The camp will encourage him in this and help him to live wisely. This is a crucial time for him. It will also be the first time that Brad and I will be able to have a break knowing that Jonathan has the best medical care available and we can trust them with his care.
