Kyan & Annabelle's student film The Grind has been selected for the Short Film Corner at the Cannes Film Festival - help us get there!
Otago
Kyan Krumdieck and myself (Annabelle Dick) are two student film makers who have been selected to show our documentary short film 'The Grind' at the Short Film Corner at the Cannes Film Festival in France in May 2016.
The Grind is a short film where Christchurch gay men reveal outrageous stories of adventure, deception, secrecy and love from their encounters set up through dating app Grindr.
This film was created as a student project at the New Zealand Broadcasting School in Christchurch, and although forces were against us with a $200 budget and only five days of filming on our hands, we managed to create an eight minute humorous and very frank documentary. This film has gone on to achieve more than we ever hoped.
The Grind made it into a pool of 40 finalists in the Kiwi and international short film competition Show Me Shorts 2015 against a thousand other entries. Our short film took away the award for the 'Best Student Film' of 2015.

Now we have been invited to be a part of the Cannes Court Métrage - the short film corner of the Cannes Film Festival.
All the effort, passion and hours of nitpicking we put into making The Grind has come to reward us in the form of this opportunity.
There is nothing both Kyan and I would love more than to travel to this world-class film event and see our brain child on the big screen on an international stage. Cannes is also an unparalleled professional opportunity. The festival is one of the largest international film markets in the world where everything from big Hollywood films to small indie projects are financed and sold. This trip would give us the opportunity to market this film and other projects we have in the works.
The cost to fund such a trip is highly extensive (especially for two students)
We need:
- $2000 return flights ($4000 altogether)
- $2000 for accommodation
- $1500 for general expenses eg. foods, buses
- $700 for the Festival's application fees and badges.
- $500-800 for suits and attire (red carpets have compulsory black suit and bow tie dress codes)
- $300-500 for business cards, fliers and other promotional material.
We are working hard to pursue every avenue for fundraising, but the expenses will still be quite high. So we're asking you, the kind people of Givealittle to help fund just a portion of this trip - the cost of our flights to the festival. We really appreciate any help you could give.
This is an opportunity we may never receive again and we want to help plant New Zealand's flag (whichever it may be then) on the market!
Help get Kyan and Annabelle to Cannes, May 2016!
