Please help me get a plaque for the burial site of a WW2 Stretcher Bearer, my grandfather.
Waikato
Most people remember September 2001 for the 9/11 tragedy. I remember it because that's the year my grandfather passed away. I was 11 and he was six weeks shy of his 83rd birthday.
He was cremated, as per his wishes. And his ashes were buried in my grandmother's grave. She was laid to rest in February of 1991 at just 64 years old.
It's been nearly 14 years and the plaque on my grandparents grave remains the original with only my grandmothers name. I feel it's time my grandfather was acknowledged.
He was a stretcher bearer in WW2, serving in (to my knowledge) Egypt in 1942. He was a Pte in Wellington's 22 Battalion. According to Jim Henderson's book "22 Battalion" there were 569 casualties, wounded and POWs in Egypt from his Battalion alone.
Grandad made it home and went on to marry and have five children. He moved the family around a lot, some believe he was unsettled from the war. But they made a home in Te Aroha and this is now their final resting place.
Please help me get a plaque for my beloved granddad.
I am hoping to raise enough funds to purchase a new ceramic or bronze plaque for their grave in the Te Aroha Lawn Cemetery.
Te Aroha RSA 14 March 2015
I've been in touch with the RSA in Te Aroha and a very friendly Bill Allison has advised that he looks after the war graves at the Te Aroha cemetery and places a white cross at the graves for a couple of weeks around ANZAC day each year. He's offered to include granddads grave this year and each thereafter.
Thank you Bill :)
