Hairgypsy $365,000 Hand up for Habitat for Humanity Christchurch
Christchurch is a coastal city in New Zealand known for its great natural and architectural beauty. Sadly, in 2011 the city was torn apart by an unexpected, life-changing earthquake. Killing 185 people, the damage caused to the city and its citizens was astonishing.
To help heal the wounds left behind by this natural disaster, the amazing workers at Habitat for Humanity have come together to help build a better tomorrow for 21 of the affected families. Their fundraiser aims to rebuild 21 houses in 2015, so that displaced people will once again have a place to call home.
Habitat for Humanity is a worldwide non-profit organization that aims to help families in need of better living conditions and the opportunity to own their own home. Last year, I decided to join their cause. My father said that: “It doesn’t matter where you go, son, there will always be someone in need of a haircut.” I’ve adopted his words as my mantra as I go on a yearlong worldwide tour as a freelance hairstylist cutting hair for a cause. Together with Habitat for Humanity, our goal is to raise $365,000 in 365 days.
“Charity begins at home, but not should not end there” (Thomas Fuller). It is in times of pain like this that everyone must stand united, so please join our cause and help us unite as a city, a nation, a community without boundaries or geographical borders. Let’s show those affected how much we care!
In order to raise awareness for the cause, I have decided to embark on a worldwide tour with nothing but a pair of scissors and the gift of hairstyling passed down in my family from generation to generation. My travels allow me to join together people and communities, and unite them in helping Habitat for Humanity accomplish their brave mission to give 21 families a new place to call home.

The amazing souls at Habitat for Humanity Christchurch have pledged to build 21 Homes to help out families worst affected by Christchurch's Fatal earthquake in February 2011.
I planned to travel the world for a year and decided I wanted to help out Habitat for Humanity and the 21 homes they were building in any way I could. By doing what I know best, cutting hair, I packed my bags with scissors in tow and departed on the 14th of May 2014.
Now with 3 months to go I want to see if together, we can finish this year with a bang.

He calls himself the hair gypsy - Kiwi Jerome Wiersma has been travelling the world with just his scissors and comb, cutting hair for free.
The freelance Christchurch hairstylist is spending 365 days on the road starting in South America, cutting up a storm and raising money for quake-hit Christchurch.
"If I can take 12 months out of my life to help out some other people it would be a fantastic thing," he says.
Brazil is bathed in World Cup fever, but Mr Wiersma's unique story has still attracted the attention of local media - his story splashed all over national TV in Brazil.
"My main objective is to do at least one haircut a day but beyond that to raise $365,000 for Habitat for Humanity, for the rebuild in Christchurch for the 21 homes they are building," he says.
The hair gypsy has posted his photos of his travels on Instagram and can be seen cutting hair in the street on Copacabana Beach, in the native rainforests and at the Iguacu Falls on the border of Argentina.
After South America he will journey to the Big Apple, where he is booked to cut hair at New York Fashion Week and will continue to cut hair on the street.
