Struck down by a medical emergency this fighter and his family need our help.

Auckland

When Mike Haira started training for the "Monty Betham Steps for Life Foundation" Fight against Childhood Obesity, it was to raise funds for improving the health of our nations children. Little did he know that just a few short weeks before his fight, he would be suddenly struck down by his own medical emergency. In Intensive care, fighting for his life, a major source of distress was that he would be unable to achieve this life goal.

Mike is a great guy, who works hard to support his family, trains hard to fund raise for people and lends a willing hand to anyone in need. His wife Lou and 6 yr old daughter look to him as their sun and their stars. His daughter and son and two grandchildren can't imagine a world without their beloved Dad and Koro.

Suddenly struck down by a medical condition which quickly proved to be life threatening Mike was raced into surgery, and a team of doctors fought against the odds to save his life. In Intensive Care, Mike lay in a medically induced coma, unaware of the turmoil around him.

He is still very unwell, but is beginning to turn a corner and now we can all think a little about his recovery which will include at least one further surgery and how that will impact this family unit.

As the main income earner this will put a strain on the family, worsened by the loss of Lou's part time income as she stands by his side helping him to recover. The additional costs of transport, parking, extra childcare for his mokopuna are overwhelming to consider. If you are able to, please donate. Or share this page, so that we can make it possible for this family to survive in their journey to fight back against this setback.

As a long term family friend, I have been asked to support by dealing with these issues while the family focus on being with Mike and surrounding him with love.

One week into this journey, Mike and the family want to thank you for all your support so far. At this stage,he has been transferred to the ward and is taking one step forward and two back most days. This morning was GOOD, but this afternoon, Mike has been put back to nil by mouth as he is not tolerating his oral intake (yoghurts etc). There is a blockage in his abdomen which is probably the reason for this, but the doctors are trying to manage this with Antibiotics at this point.

Mike has come to understand the seriousness of the situation, and how long a road he will have to recovery and this has understandably caused him some distress. We are very grateful for the support offered so far.

Mikey is still a fighter, and though the road in front of him has some steep uphill climbs, he is determined to be well again. At this stage he is likely to be in hospital for some time, with lots of work needed after he is released before he will be able to go back to life as usual, so the funds being raised here will make a huge difference to the family. Thank you all.
