My new trike
Wellington
My name is Lucas and I have just turned 5. I live in Waikanae, NZ, with my Mama. I was born with a bone disorder called Fibular Hemimelia, I was born without a Fibular and a deformed Femur and foot. When I was 10 months old, I was fitted with my first prosthetic leg. When I was 3, I had an operation called a Van Ness Rotationplasty. This rare procedure was performed rather than having an amputation, which is more common for my disorder. This operation meant that I now have a knee joint which made it easier for me to walk once I had my new prosthetic made and fitted. I would love to be able to ride a bike like all of my friends, but unfortunately I can't, as I don't have enough strength or mobility in my leg to pedal........until now. I have just been referred to a cycle shop where they specialise in made to measure trikes for kids like me. I was able to try one out and it was great, I could use the pedals like a normal little boy. It was very exciting, especially when I went really fast and my Mama had to chase me and try and keep up. The only problem is, my Mama cannot afford to buy this bike all on her own as it costs a lot of money. Please can you help me to ride a bike to school with my friends. Thank you from a very excited 5 year old.
