Nico was diagnosed with high risk acute lymphoblastic leukaemia (ALL) in February 2015 (17 months)
Auckland
In February 2015 our gorgeous boy Nico was diagnosed with high risk acute lymphoblastic leukaemia at 17 months old.
We immediately began intensive treatment and Nico went into remission within the first phase of treatment however it is a long road ahead for us with a treatment end date of 8 June 2018.
We are very fortunate that Nico is responding so well to his treatment and hasn't suffered severe side effects yet.
As Nico's parents we have a positive / hopeful outlook and have tried our best to be practical in his care. I (Avelien) take care of Nico during the day and take him to all his clinic appointments (at one stage this was 4 times per week!) and when Nico is admitted for infection or treatment we work in shifts; ensuring one of us is always with him and that we both remain rested and strong for our little man.
We have been so blessed by the kindness and generosity of friends, family, colleagues and strangers with meals, help with housekeeping and sometimes just an ear to listen.
We would be humbled and grateful to receive any support and hope that our friends and families can share our page and story with their communities and help our family.
Much love,
Nico, Avelien & Tere
Nico's Beads of Courage 15 September 2015
These are Nico’s Beads of Courage. Each bead represents a treatment (for example chemotherapy, injections, scans); an experience (hair loss, isolation, fever) or a milestone (completion of treatment). For each medical procedure or treatment he receives a bead.
At the age of 2 our brave boy has over 400 Beads… this includes over 100 blood draws, 55 clinic visits, 46 nights in hospital, 11 lumber punctures and 6 blood transfusions.
Crazy proud of our courageous, brave son!
