James lives in Kibera and wants to put his children through school - but his ability to do that is hampered by the fact that he had polio.
Nationwide
James has a fierce courage and infectious humour and he does everything he can help others living with disabilities in Kibera. But what he wants to do most is put the children he cares for (his own and orphans) through school. That challenge is threatened every month is he tries to raise the school fees in the most impoverished circumstances.
I got to spend time with James and his family in 2011. He "retreaded" the finials on my crutches with pieces of car tyres and four years later they still don't need to be replaced - before that I had to replace them every few months! Living in New Zealand aging with the late-effects of polio is challenging enough - I could barely comprehend how James manages in the situation he is in. But he showed no concern for himself - his every effort was to help the other disabled people, and the children around him. I helped build a "workshop" for him to repair shoes to feed his family. I want to help him put the children he cares for through school - because they are the ones that will take care of him as he ages with the late effects of polio.
