Life may be reaching a kind of normality for some people of Samoa, post the '09 tsunami - but others still need our commitment.
Auckland
On September 29th 2009 an 8.1 magnitude earthquake generated a tsunami causing substantial damage and loss of life in Samoa, American Samoa, and Tonga. New Zealand scientists determined that the waves measured 14 metres as they hit the Samoan coast. The death toll was at least 129. In Samoa 77 people were reported dead, and 150 were injured.
In September, we'll be on the ground, in Samoa, with the wonderful team pictured.
Our aim is two-fold:
(1) to give hope to the children of the villages hardest hit by the 2009 tsunami, by relocating an ex-Auckland Council playground and establishing a children's ministry.
(2) to show God's love and encouragement to the staff and pupils of an Apia school for children with learning difficulties – installing a playground; providing educational resources; and spending time in play and activities with the children.
We are seeing great support for this mission from the local community - with opportunities to fund raise; and donations of play equipment and learning resources.
We’ve also been supported by YWAM’s Ministry organisation called Marine Reach, who will transport the equipment and resources from NZ to Samoa, in exchange for work the team did to repair and refurbish their ‘Pacific Hope’ ship before its next operation to Vanuatu.
We still have a lot of work to do though – and seek your support in donating to our fundraising efforts, to make the mission a thorough success……
Your generous donations will be used to cover the following costs while in Samoa:
> primer, paint, painting equipment for playgrounds and buildings
> wooden posts and cement to install playgrounds
> stationery - paper, glue, scissors, crayons
> other resources for children's ministry, education and play
> donation to host families
> contribution towards the team's flights and insurance
Thank you for your support!
Each member of the group has their own story about why we are involved in this mission. My family has been connected with this mission since we went to Samoa in 2009, to get alongside locals after the tsunami 3 months earlier. We know there's more to do - more we can do - and we are committed to doing it!
We are going to Samoa to give hope to the children of the villages hardest hit by the 2009 tsunami, by relocating and installing an ex-Auckland Council playground; and working with the local Elders to establish and run children's programmes, such as Mainly Music. We will also be showing love by encouraging the staff and pupils of an Apia school for children with learning difficulties – installing a playground; providing educational resources; and spending time in play and activities with the children.
To-date, we've been blessed with the support of YWAM’s Ministry organisation called Marine Reach, who will transport the equipment and resources from NZ to Samoa, in exchange for work we did to repair and refurbish their ‘Pacific Hope’ ship before its next operation to Vanuatu.
