Help a good man in his fight against Acute Myeloid Leukemia (AML)
Auckland
Sean Hibberd is a great friend of mine. He is a husband to Joanne, father to Shania and Neela and hard working honest guy.
We have been friends for 30 years. Our group of friends in Intermediate and high school spent the bulk of our weekends at his house and were a part of the family thanks to the kindness and generosity of Terry and Glen, his mum and dad.
Sean has been actively involved in his community, for years now. Coaching 4 or 5 school and youth basketball teams based in or around Massey, where he grew up and still lives.
5 years ago Sean was diagnosed with Crohn's disease an auto immune disease that effects the digestive tract. He suffered terrible complications with the disease which lead to ongoing stays in hospitals and ultimately harsher drug regimen involving heavy duty immune suppressing drugs.
In July 2014 (potentially as a result of the immune suppressing drugs) Sean's bone marrow shut down.
In November 2014 Sean was diagnosed with Myelodysplastic Syndrome (MDS for short) a precursor to Leukemia.
For Christmas 2014 Sean got the diagnosis of Acute Myeloid Leukemia (AML). Approximately 50% chance of survival if he can successfully find a bone marrow donor.
Sean is not likely to be able to continue working for the foreseeable future as his treatment is likely to be taxing and regular. He is due to start Chemotherapy this week (16/01/2015). So this page is partially to help support his family through the grueling process ahead of him.
However there is also a potential opportunity for Sean to travel to Mexico to a hospital run by a world renowned Microbiologist for experimental treatment. The hospital (Sanoviv) has had success the recent past with patients with the same diagnosis. The catch is that this is not a free service and would likely cost upwards of US$35,000, so my hope is that we can help contribute to this expense.
Joanne, Shania and Neela need him around. I can't stand the idea of my friend having to leave his beautiful girls so soon.
Any contribution to help this good man and his family will be extremely appreciated.
Helping my good friend get through this tough battle.
Thanks to all who contributed to Sean's fund 23 July 2015
Most of you who know Sean will now know that, very sadly he passed away on Friday the 26th. Sean's family and friends are working through the loss of this gentle giant. They are grateful for all of the support and generosity the Give a Little community provided.
He will be sorely missed & our thoughts and prayers are with his beautiful family,
Arohanui
