In January 2016, I will begin a 10-12 month legal fellowship in the Philippines with the International Justice Mission (IJM) a Christian NGO that works to prove that justice for the poor is possible.
IJM recognises that violence is the most urgent threat for millions of the world's poorest people, and its casework focuses on violent forms of oppression that effect the poor and vulnerable (for example, sex trafficking, forced labour slavery, and police abuse of power, to name just a few).
IJM investigators, lawyers and social workers work in partnership with state and local authorities in developing countries to rescue and restore victims, bring perpetrators to justice, and strengthen justice systems from within.
While I am serving with IJM in the Cebu Field Office, my day-to-day work is likely to include:
• Assisting in the preparation for upcoming prosecutions (i.e. researching legal issues, writing briefs of evidence)
• Developing and conducting presentations and legal training sessions
• Participating in legal strategy meetings
• Participating in rescue planning sessions
My role with IJM is fully self-funded, including flights (to Washington DC for training, and then to the Philippines), accommodation and living costs.
If it is on your heart to support the work I'll be doing, you can donate here. Feel free to contact me directly if you would like to know more about how your contribution will be used. Thanks for your support, and for joining the fight against injustice!
