Billy suffers from a rare disease called 'Lebers Hereditary Optic Neuropathy' causing dramatic central vision loss.
Wellington
Billy is 16 years old, in July this year he started to have rapid vision loss. Billy has been diagnosed with 'Lebers Hereditary Optic Neuropathy' a mitochondrial mutation causing rapid central vision loss. Billy was accepted for a drug trial just over 5 weeks ago, the response has been amazing! At Billys check up last week the improvement was very encouraging, his vision was good enough to go for his restricted drivers license :) (Five weeks ago Billy couldn't recognise a face) But....it soon became a bitter/sweet moment when the specialist informed us that the drug has been approved in Europe, meaning we would now have to pay for the medication :( The price for this medication is $60,000 for a six month script :(
I am Billy's Mum, and would appreciate any help we can get for Billy to help him maintain his vision.
GREAT NEWS!! 1 December 2015
