Deanna has bravely dealt with and overcame much more that any six year should and still has a long difficult journey ahead.
Wellington
In December last year, 6-year-old Deanna Marsden and her parents noticed some swelling on her thigh which they thought was a result of bumping her leg on the last day of term but was later diagnosed to be something more serious. The news was that she had an osteosarcoma, a cancerous tumor in her right thigh bone.
Deanna bravely started 6 months of chemotherapy ahead when they discovered the cancer had spread. Once the initial chemo course was completed they could carry out a procedure called Van-Nes rotationplasty, which is where the cancerous part of the bone is removed and surgery is performed to allow Deanna to wear a prosthetic.
The courageous Deanna is now going through her second course of chemo and has been living in the Ronald McDonald House where her mum (Diane) has also setup residence, her father (Adam) is in Nelson looking after Deanna’s 3 sisters and they visit as much as possible.
It has been an inspiration seeing how strong Deanna has been through this whole ordeal and the dignity that the family has shown, sticking together and managing to keep a smile on their faces during such a difficult and challenging journey is amazing.
We are hoping that we can raise some funds for The Marsden family to help them with the ongoing support and recovery for Deanna.
Deanna's mother is my cousin and her extended family are trying to raise as much as we can to help support The Marsden family during such a difficult time.
