Nepal Needs New Zealand - supporting 2 small charities in their work in remote villages in Nepal

$11,020 donated
Given by 20 generous donors in around 5 months

Every dollar given to these small charities - Forgotten Sherpas Trust and Nestling Trust reaches the villages they support in Nepal.

Nationwide

Forgotten Sherpas Trust - was selected by us because it is a charity run by a small number of people in South Canterbury, who provide their time and efforts voluntarily - both here in New Zealand and in Nepal. Every cent donated goes directly to Nepal, either as funds or as resources for the village of Damar. This very remote village does not benefit from tourism but has benefited from this trusts support - with solar power, water systems, school resources, health clinics and support. The focus now is on funding replacement housing following the earthquakes.

Nestling Trust - this trust was selected after meeting its founder in Kathmandu following the April 25 earthquake. Sue Hamblin is a nurse from the UK who works with a dedicated team of directors from both Nepal and England. Their expertise includes business and financial management, community projects, human rights, health and education and construction and engineering. This trust is responsible for rescuing 20 street kids from a corrupt orphanage two years ago and reconnecting them with their families. They are now in the process of building a home for street children who have no family or who need a level of support that their families are unable to provide. As part of that support they will provide health care and education. The care they provide may be short or long term, depending on need. They also provide health clinics in remote villages. Their focus since the earthquakes is to fund the construction of bamboo housing to provide shelter.

Janice Hide's involvement (page creator)

We have become involved because we were in Kathmandu when the earthquake occurred on 25 April. We spent the following 5 days witnessing the shock, the despair and the destruction that occurred, with Nepalese people losing loved ones, homes and livelihoods. We were also made acutely aware of the lack of resources and infrastructure within Nepal, and their inability to cope with such a major disaster. Unlike the Christchurch earthquakes, there was no support available within Nepal and they struggled to manage the international aid as it started to arrive.

There are two ways in which we want to support Nepal. Firstly through these two trusts which we know will deliver because they are small, dedicated and have systems in place to overcome the corruption that exists in Nepal.

Secondly, we will return to do our trek to Everest Base Camp and the Gokyo Lakes - at some stage. Tourism is Nepals primary source of income and this is the best way as individuals that we can support the beautiful people of Nepal. We would encourage you all to do the same as Nepal recovers.

All funds donated will be split 50/50 between the two Trusts
