Meet Rita. At the age of 54 Rita suffered a stroke unexpectedly in September 2013. Before the stroke Rita was otherwise healthy, and involved in many community initiatives. Over the last 30 years Rita has worked tirelessly often in a voluntary capacity to help work toward the betterment of her community, her whanau, hapu and iwi. After suffering the stroke, Rita was sadly debilitated. Although Rita has made some remarkable progress in the last year, she still struggles with the everyday things in life that you and I take for granted. Rita has already over come many challenging things and has had to adapt hugely. The daily struggle of reading, writing and basic communication is a task on its own. Self care is a challenge, brushing her hair, her teeth, getting changed, putting shoes on, normal daily tasks continue to be a hurdle. Again, the things most of us take for granted. The exciting news is, Rita has been accepted into a Stroke Treatment program which is only available in the USA. This treatment has shown some amazing results. Ritas treatment is scheduled for 9 January 2015. Estimated costs for travel, accommodation and treatment are around $30,000.00 NZ. Given the short notice and not wanting to miss this amazing opportunity we are now calling on the community spirit to help. If you can spare a little for this cause, Rita and her whanau will be forever grateful. Thank you!
