Help raise funds for SWAS after a devastating fire destroyed a number of classrooms.

West Coast

On Thursday 27 August 2015 South Westland Area School, a remote 98-student (ranging from age 5 to 18 years) school – 72 kilometres South of Hokitika, was struck by tragedy, firefighters were called about 7pm after a nearby farmer saw smoke coming from the building. The fire leapt into the ceiling then raced through several classrooms. Neighbouring rooms, although not burned, had smoke and water damage. Cyclone Ita, which hit the Coast in April 2014, caused damage to the school beyond what was covered by insurance. This included our school/local community pool. Which we are still fundraising for. The school was left with a $60,000 bill so further repairs have left Mr Brockbank (Principal) despondent. "You always want to leave a school a better place than you found it and I'm going backwards." There is no nearby school to send students to as students travel up to an hour to attend South Westland Area School. We have students that travel north as far as Hokitika and south as far as Fox Glacier. This is a small community school with a big heart and any donations big or small would be greatly appreciated
