Women from refugee background communities identified the need to obtain a licence as their number one priority to feel connected.
Wellington
The difficulties refugee and humanitarian entrants face in obtaining a drivers’ license has been identified as a major barrier to employment (Flanagan, 2007). Add to this the dilemma of efficient and or affordable public transport especially for those doing shift work and the inability to drive can become a bigger issue for some.
CRF is in its third year of running Turning The Curve: Refugee Women Drive. Gaining a licence for women of refugee-background could mean:
• decreased dependency on others for transportation
• the chance to be part of community activities
• the ability to drive family members to appointments and to respond quickly when there is an emergency
• a greater opportunity to gain employment and participate in the wider community.
ChangeMakers is proud to be leading their journey – and invites you to be part of it too.The money raised will assist CRF's operational costs in delivering the programme. To support our operational delivery means you will be making a significant difference to these women, their families, and communities. It will enable them to reach their destination.
Our vision is to live in a society where New Zealanders from refugee-backgrounds are fully participating in New Zealand life. To achieve this vision we work with refugee-background communties and others to ensure people reach their full potential and are supported to contribute in their own and the wider community.
ChangeMakers Refugee Forum (CRF) is a rights-based, non-government organisation (NGO) representing refugee-background communities in Wellington, New Zealand.
Our vision is that New Zealanders from refugee backgrounds can fully participate in New Zealand life. We aim to achieve this vision through working on community development, research and advocacy.
Underpinning our work is the principle, "nothing about us, without us".

One of things refugees struggle with when arriving in New Zealand is learning to drive on our roads.
Changemakers Refugee Forum is a Wellington NGO giving female refugees an opportunity to learn how to drive.
Naomi Tocher, a Community Development worker with women at the Changemakers Refugee Forum, spoke to Wire Producer Sara Shirazi about what the programme is all about.
