I'm going to the Philippines to take part in volunteer projects. Any extra funding will go a long way in supporting me & making a difference
International
My name is Kate and I am 20 years old, currently working as a chef in Wellington.
In August, I will be giving up my job and travelling to the Philippines for several months on my biggest adventure yet. During my travels, I will be working with International Volunteer HQ as well as the Green Lion organisation to carry out projects in the Davao area. With them, I will be building community centres and facilities, to create safer, more stable and healthier environments for these people to live and grow in.
Here in New Zealand we are so fortunate compared to many other nations and any donation, big or small, can make a big impact. $5 for us, is like $50 for them. Financial support from others will help me to contribute as much as I can to the local communities and businesses which I will be in close contact with.
Working as a volunteer is self funded, so the more support I can get, the more I can do for the beautiful filipino people. They deserve the same opportunities and quality of life as we have. So, anything that you can give me, to help others, will be hugely appreciated.
Any money you donate will be going towards covering the costs of taking part in this project; my dorm accommodation, transport and meals, as well as building supplies and resources that will be put straight back into the community we are working for. Also, a portion of the costs to volunteer are donated to the IVHQ fund which goes towards a range of community initiatives around the world. It's a great cause to get behind.
My involvement in this project will involve a hands on approach: learning the tricks of the trade in construction to physically build these facilities for local communities.
As well as doing this, in my spare time I will be able to help to the Filipino people by supporting the local economy, markets and family businesses. Hopefully along the way I will be able to share my knowledge and experiences from New Zealand, to educate and support growth in the communities, and do my part in assisting development.
Mission Complete! .. For now 7 October 2015
Hello everyone!
I haven't been on top of on going updates as I had planned to be, but I have put together a video to show what I have been doing and where your donations went.
I have just finished my volunteering in Davao, after spending 3 very hot weeks helping a project based on building houses for the disabled and victims of flood and fire. The area was very undeveloped so the help and money towards resources was much needed, as the people didn't have much. I donated some tools to the workers including wheelbarrows, as many shovels as I could buy in the store and a saw too.
The video will give you an idea of the conditions I was working in and the type of work we were doing. Of course I couldn't capture it all because my hands were often full and there was a lot of heavy lifting involved but when I had a bit of spare time I tried to capture what I could.
Thank you again for your generous donations and help towards my volunteering experience. I really think I made a difference.
