Running 60km for Samaritans

On 15 July, this amazing group of people will be running 60km in the Wellington Urban Ultra 2K, which is a trail-running endurance event around the hills that surround Wellington.

Life can be tough sometimes. But everyday Samaritans volunteers are there to listen and help people work through whatever is troubling them.

Last year the Samaritans helpline received over 30,000 calls from people dealing with issues like relationship breakdown, job loss, financial concerns, bereavement, loneliness, depression and suicidal thoughts.

A lot of people who call the Samaritans are in crisis and “don’t feel like life is worth living anymore”. Samaritans create a safe space for people to talk about what’s troubling them and just how awful they are feeling. We ask questions to help callers consider their situation more objectively and help them to see other options that may be available to them. Our job is to give them hope.
