Vegetarian Runner Aiming to run Taupo Marathon under 3h 15minutes (making it to the top 3%).
Southland
Do athletes really need to eat meat? Or do they just eat it like the majority of us because they too are afraid to challenge the status quo?
The more I research nutrition the more I see athletes completing incredible feats on vegan diets. Google Rich Roll, Scott Jurek, John Joseph, Jake Shield, Brendan Brazier for inspiration.
Farming meat is one of the biggest polluters to the environment there is no arguing that. However I am astounded by how many people passionately tell me I can’t be healthy without meat.
I have decided to run the Taupo August marathon to test athletic performance on a vegetarian diet. Pretty much all I am eating is legumes, nuts and a lot of dark green vegetables. (Fruit only while training and refined sugar just one day a week as a treat. Sugar is the new smoking) To make it a real test my training plan consists of only 5 runs over 5km. (For those interested I can send through my 12-week training program and/or nutrition program.)
The plan is to finish the marathon in under 3hours 15minutes. Of the 277 competitors only 9 did this in the Taupo 2015 Marathon putting me in the top 3%.
Top 3%! Imagine that! 5 runs, only veggies and I am in the top 3% of marathon athletes.
I'm doing this challenge to prove that humans can thrive on a vegetarian diet. Please donate to the NZ Vegetarian Society to help spreading the positive message.
Race day is 6th of August, I'll keep you posted

Jeremy got in to the Top 3% 8 August 2016
Congrats to Jeremy! He made it 1st in his division (19-24years) and 10th overall place - made it to the top 3%!!!
Many runners pulled out due to extreme weather conditions, but Jeremy - running on plants - made it to the finish line in such an amazing time. Anything is possible on a vegetarian diet! <3
