EWB formed a partnership with Vanuatu Earth Care Association (VECA) in April 2013 to work together on the 'Santo Solar Schools' project.
Nationwide
Electricity prices in Vanuatu are amongst the highest in the Pacific, and the high cost of electricity is having a detrimental impact on the continuing growth and development of schools in Vanuatu.
The Santo Solar Schools project is part of a larger initiative led by VECA to reduce environmental impact in the community.
EWBNZ has been providing technical assistance to support this initiative. To date, the EWB Canterbury Students Branch has completed a feasibility study and preliminary research, and a field trip is planned for late 2014.
VECA is a community based organisation located on the island of Espiritu Santo, Vanuatu with around 2,000 volunteer members. VECA's primary objective is the cultural and environmental conservation of the island and to promote sustainable development, sustainable uses of resources, alleviate poverty and improve livelihoods.
Your donations will go towards our work with community partners, including the Santo Solar Schools project.
Engineers Without Borders New Zealand (EWBNZ) is a member based not for profit organisation with a vision for a world where everyone has access to the engineering knowledge and resources required to lead a life of opportunity, free from poverty.
EWBNZ is a movement of professionals and students with strong values and a passion for humanitarian engineering within New Zealand and the South Pacific.
We have a shared belief that engineering leadership has an important role to play in sustainable human development, and that engineers have a responsibility to provide effective and innovative solutions in addressing the challenges of equality, poverty alleviation, and sustainability.
EWBNZ works in partnership to address a lack of access to basic human needs such as clean water, sanitation and hygiene, energy, basic infrastructure, waste systems, information communication technology and engineering education.
We educate and train students, engineers and the wider community on issues including sustainable development, appropriate technology, poverty and the power of humanitarian engineering.
