Ethan Tuo was a healthy, energetic 3-year-old until a rare stroke took his life in September this year, just three weeks before his 4th birthday.
Ethan loved Peppa Pig and helping others, his mother Xiaoming (Michelle) Tuo says he will be most remembered for his smile. Michelle believes that Ethan would have survived if he was not misdiagnosed the stroke with seizures and was told to go home instead of going for further investigations. As Michelle recalled "Ethan still couldn’t walk, stand, talk, eat, drink or urinate". At the time, she was really worried about Ethan but she had no options and took Ethan home on the doctor’s advice. Overnight, Michelle checked on Ethan regularly. She called 111 after finding Ethan unresponsive early morning the next day. Ethan had suffered a stroke and could not be saved. Ethan died in Christchurch Hospital's intensive care unit after his life support was turned off two days later.
Ethan's death and the care he received are being investigated by health officials.

每天早上6点到晚上11点，华人妈妈 Xiaoming (Michelle) Tuo的生活都是围绕着4个孩子转。
刚刚过去的9月，原本家里最重要的一件事，就是为儿子Ethan庆祝4岁生日，甚至连生日蛋糕的主题都已经定好了。然而，由于突发中风，Ethan再也没有机会许下生日愿望。Michelle认为，是新西兰医生的不负责任，导致她失去了孩子。
9点40分，Ethan突然躺在沙发上，脖子和脸涨红，喊了一声“妈妈”，然后倒在地上。
Ethan的手脚紧绷、蜷曲，眼睛盯着天花板，无法站立。
Michelle立马把Ethan抱在怀里，一边打家医的电话一边呼喊儿子的名字。
但Ethan似乎失去了知觉，不说话也没有反应。
Michelle不时望向墙上的钟，她记得十分清楚，这一昏迷过程持续了10分钟。
随后Ethan清醒过来，但还是不说话，只是发出一些细微的声音来回应Michelle。
Michelle带着儿子来到家医就诊，她清楚地描述了Ethan昏迷10分钟的过程。
医生称Ethan是癫痫发作，10分钟的时间很不正常并且十分危险，并建议她带Ethan去基督城医院就诊。Michelle自己开车到达医院急诊部，此时Ethan双眼紧闭，处于昏睡状态。
Michelle再次把Ethan此前昏迷10分钟的过程告知了医生，并说“他现在仍然看起来不舒服，不能说话、站立、走路，也不能喝水、吃东西”。不过，医生告诉她不要担心，因为癫痫患者需要一段时间才能康复，这是正常的。在医院度过了一个下午后，医生告知Michelle可以带Ethan回家了，并提供了如果孩子再次癫痫发作该如何应对的信息。
令Michelle困惑的是，在住院期间，医生一直敦促尽快为Ethan量身高、验尿，但Ethan由于身体状况根本做不了检查，现在连检查都没有完成，Ethan真的可以出院吗？Michelle有点犹豫，她觉得Ethan的状态似乎比入院前更差了。
“他看起来还是病得很严重，似乎更困了，一直想睡觉。”
Michelle再次跟医生确认，“你确定我可以带儿子回家吗？他看起来还是很不舒服，我很担心他。”
得到了医生的肯定回答后，Michelle只能选择相信医生。
“我不能拒绝让孩子出院，因为她是医生，她是专业人士。”
出院回家中风发作
回家后，Michelle把Ethan放到了床上。
每隔一段时间，她就会检查一下正在熟睡的Ethan。
晚上7点、8点半、10点、11点半，一直到第二天凌晨2点半又检查了一次。
此时的Michelle已经奔波了一天，她有点熬不住了，于是小憩了一会儿。
等到凌晨5点45分，她再次查看Ethan，却发现儿子没有任何反应。
“我摸了摸，他全身冰冷，没有呼吸，也没有心跳，嘴唇发黑，眼睛也闭上了。”
Michelle立即叫了救护车，她开始崩溃、尖叫。
家人一直在给Ethan做心肺复苏，直到急救人员赶到展开抢救。
4分钟过后，Ethan恢复了心跳，被送往基督城医院。
不过，医生告诉Michelle，Ethan中风导致血液无法流向大脑，基本已经脑死亡。
母亲不想放弃希望
Ethan住在ICU病房，靠呼吸机维持生命。他一直昏迷不醒，已经脑死亡。
医生同意再观察24小时，看看是否会出现医学奇迹。
当天，Michelle看到Ethan的手指轻轻动了几下，于是她又哀求医生再次延长观察24小时。
她不想放弃，哪怕只有一丝希望，甚至没有希望。
“我一直抱着Ethan，对他说我很想他，求他不要离开妈妈。”
“我给他放他最爱的小猪佩奇动画片，玩他最喜欢的乐高积木。”
“Ethan平时最不忍心看到我流泪，所以我一直哭，希望他能醒过来安慰妈妈。”
Ethan似乎也能感受到Michelle的呼唤。
“我看到Ethan哭了，他的眼睛左右两边分别流下了一滴眼泪”，Michelle说。
医生告诉Michelle，可能是Ethan听到了妈妈的哭泣和话语，但Ethan的生命已经无法挽救了。
坚持了2天后，在所有人的同意下，Ethan被拔掉了呼吸机，停止了心跳。
Michelle抱着Ethan，感受着儿子身体的温度一点点逝去。
随后，她给Ethan换上了他最爱的一套衣服，送他离开。
Ethan是家里的开心果，他离开后，家里变得十分安静。Ethan走后，Michelle还有3个孩子需要照顾。
“在孩子们面前，我必须要坚强，”她说。
“我从不哭，但到了晚上……我睡不着。”
