Providing additional financial support to Adi & Cal after their house was badly damaged in the Binna Burra bushfire.

International

Adi & Cal's home has been badly damaged by fire, smoke and water in Binna Burra bushfire. Here is a message from Cal on 9 September:

"Adi and I would like to thank the incredible people who fought to save our home, Beechmont fire brigade and all others who joined them. Our home is badly damaged by an ember that came in through the top level and went rampant from then on. We are ok as are our cats and in good spirits after the shock and the sadness that is engulfing Beechmont and the rest of QLD. Thanks to everyone who has sent messages and thoughts of love supporting us, it means everything 💕 No one is allowed back into the area at the moment as it’s still dicey. We have an amazing community with so much heart. Thanks again"

Adi & Cal have house insurance, but this never covers all the costs when something like this happens. Both Adi & Cal are studying in addition to working, but will need to take time out from both - so any support that friends in New Zealand can give them will be much appreciated.

Kris has known Adi for over 20 years when we worked together at DOC, and met Cal when I traveled to Queensland last year.

Use of funds

Funds will be used for covering all those extra expenses not covered by insurance when a devastating fire has occurred.

Thank you  21 January 2020

Dear friends and whanau,

It’s been five months since we lost our home in the Sarabah Fire. We are well under way with recovery and we want to thank you for your incredible generosity in helping us get to this point. Your financial and emotional support is helping us rebuild our lives and our home and here is an update on where it’s at.

The insurance assessment made the decision to rebuild rather than demolish, so we get to keep the funky chalet style house. The scaffolding is up in preparation to lift off the roof and the structure underneath to install a new roof and structural ceiling, cross beams and tie downs for the high winds up here. Because the house was built some time ago many of its parts were non-compliant, so fortunately for us the house will now follow building, storm and fire regulations, what a fantastic bonus.

We have been planting a food forest, with fruit trees for us and native shrubs for the wildlife and bees. Doing this is very grounding and also maintains a deep connection to the property, as we currently can’t live there.

We’re looking forward to moving back in, potentially the end of March. Cal is happily anticipating the outdoor bath, newly installed on the verandah, and the highlight for Adi is walking into the walk in wardrobe extension, complete with shoe rack!

So thank you once again for your support and wishing you all a happy 2020. May the year bring you peace and joy.
