Life changed for Whangarei lady, Alysha Cosgrave now 26, when she was involved in a car accident which left her a tetraplegic.

Northland

May 7th 2010 is a day Alysha Cosgrave will never forget.

She was just 19 years old at the time when the car she was traveling in with friends crashed leaving her with life changing injuries. As she sat helpless in the back of the car unable to move her body she instantly knew the situation was dire.

Not making a fuss or a sound Alysha allowed the paramedics to free her from the wreckage. Alysha was taken to the hospital where she was told her spinal cord was severed by 95% and she’d broken vertebrae C4, C5 and C6. It was at that moment she learned she would live the rest of her life as a tetraplegic.

With support from her wonderful family and loving boyfriend Chris Malafu, the months spent rehabilitating in the spinal unit were just about bearable. Alysha was itching to get back to her beloved animals to which truly were a tonic towards her recovery.

One year later, plans were made and the future was looking brighter for Alysha and Chris. This happiness was tragically short lived however as on the 20th April 2011 her soul mate and best friend Chris Malafu, (age 19) suffered a fatal asthma attack just meters away from a helpless Alysha. Alysha was distraught with grief. Her days had just became darker and she spiralled into a deep depression.

Alysha is a lovely lady who has a heart of pure gold. She is now 26 years old. She has good days, she has bad days but without a doubt it's the love from her family, friends, carers and pets that help her get through. Alysha takes extreme care of her animals, more often than not spending her meagre allowance on vet bills and upkeep for her dogs, rats, fish, guinea pig, birds, turkeys, sheep and a geogeous KuneKune pig named Molly. Alysha has also talked enthusiastically about opening an animal sanctuary to foster injured or unwanted animals at her home in Whangarei. Her love and passion for all creatures great and small just shines through her.

Like every other young person she aspires to travel and would love to tour New Zealand. Before her accident Alysha had a love and passion for spending days out fishing with her devoted parents, Phil and Leslee, special times making special memories. So with your help we would love to get Alysha out and about again by helping to lift the financial burden of caring for her animals.

Thank you all for your kindness and generosity, Alysha sends her love and thanks.
