Appeal for new Wheels

$11,011 of $24,000 goal
Given by 145 generous donors in one year

The appeal for wheels is critical to Melanie's ongoing rehabilitation, freedom and family life.

Otago

In 2015, Melanie was struck down by a catastrophic brain stem stroke which resulted in her being left with "locked in syndrome". Melanie has defied the odds and continued to fight her cause, however due to her daily needs, she lives full time at a care facility.

Through determination, her family have made it possible to bring her home at the weekends to be with her husband and two girls and they have also organised the continuation of her critical rehabilitation programmes - swimming at the physio pool and weights programme at the gym under the watchful eye of the amazing team at Sky Fitness, however this all comes at a cost to Melanie who must fund everything herself for transport and rehabilitation as she is not eligible to receive funding from the government.

There is an opportunity to purchase a van that is already fully adapted to transport Melanie and her wheelchair. Owning this van will provide her the biggest thing of all - freedom. Freedom to go anywhere she wants to, freedom to go to the gym daily and not be restricted due to funds or availability of taxis. This is a must have in moving forward with results. Melanie's funds have depleted over time with costs associated with things we take for granted. Melanie's future is now dependent on having her own transport.

The purpose of this fundraising is to pay for an adapted van that is owned by Melanie and will enable her to continue much needed rehabilitation as well as day to day ability to be mobile.

With no government funding, Melanie is restricted to using taxis as required. Taxis are limited, and are costing a small fortune. A van opens up Melanie's world going forward.

Use of funds

All funds raised will be paid directly into a Trust fund account that has been set up in Melanie's name. Funds raised will be paid directly to the purchase of the van.

Dreams do come true  27 July 2018

It is so exciting to share with you all that today Mel's dream of her wheels to freedom came true - she got her fully equipped van!!

To make this dream a reality, friends and family have dug deep to and provided the additional funding to purchase the van.

Funding for Mel will be ongoing due to her circumstances so watch this space! There will be ongoing fundraising that we will be aiming to do to keep the fund pot above the line. This money will always be for the purpose of providing Mel with her "wheels to freedom".

On behalf of Mel and her family - thank you so much for your kind generosity. Your support has meant so much to everyone, but most of all Mel.

Look out Dunedin, she is back!

Hi, I met Mel when I was working as one of the hospital chaplains, first in ICU and then up at Wakari, and knew some of the other family members. I have often wondered what happened to Mel; I am so pleased to see that she has made such amazing progress, and would love to help, even in this little way, towards enabling the family to do more together.
