To fundraise for people in Chimanimani Zimbabwe impacted by the Cyclone Idai, who need food and medicine.

International

Dunedin Hospital staff are banding together to fundraise for individuals impacted by the devastating Cyclone Idai, which recently swept through Southern Africa (Malawi , Mozambique and Zimbabwe).

The natural disaster has caused serious flooding and resulted in a humanitarian crisis, with thousands of people displaced without food or shelter.

The fundraising initiative ‘BIN IT FOR ZIMBABWE’ is being fronted by three Southern DHB SMOs with links to Africa – Dr Adel Mekhail, Dr John Woodfield and Dr Elliot Mackenzie.

Gynaecologist and Obstetrician, Dr Mackenzie says it’s a desperate situation. “Aid organisations and governments are struggling to cope, so a small donation would go a long way. We hope to raise enough funds to be sent to an identified responsible organisation in Zimbabwe to buy food, medicines and clothes for those in need.”

Higher Life foundation who have set up camp in Chimanimani Zimbabwe will receive all proceeds.

The actual blue bin for cash donations for the Zimbabwe cyclone victims will be in the Dunedin Hospital foyer for people to donate any amounts.

I have teamed up with two other senior doctors at Dunedin Hospital , Drs Adel Mekhail and John Woodfield, to raise money for Zimbabwean communities affected by Cyclone Idai towards food and medicine largely from the Dunedin Community and alert New Zealanders to the catastrophe that affected southern Africa so that people can help in anyway they can.

Use of funds

Funding will be passed on to Higher Life Foundation to buy food, medicines and clothing for the flood victims.
