Rangihoua is New Zealands most important land for all Maori and Pakeha alike.
It was not only the location of the very first school built under direction of Cheif Ruatara to teach English to his people.
It was also the place where the first mission was built and the first religious sermon was held.
In 1814 the ship MAYFLOWER arrived at Oihi carrying the first European family who came by invitation for Chief Ruatara.
This significant place was also where the first Maori literature was written.
