To fund legal council for our fight to make waste trucks safer for all New Zealanders - making sensors mandatory for all waste trucks
Gisborne
Just over 2 years ago we lost our 3rd daughter Carla when she was struck by a WM LEV one man operated truck as she entered our drive way coming home from school. Carla was almost 7 years old. The truck being driven had no front sensors or cameras and the driver did not see our daughter when getting back in the truck after the pick up.
WorksafeNZ, Gisborne District Council and Waste Management have jointly made no technology improvements (cameras or sensors) for pedestrian detection with this being a ticking time bomb for a future occurrence.
We hope to make sensors a minimum requirement for all waste trucks collecting in New Zealand to protect our communities and never have anyone lose their life unnecessarily to waste collection trucks ever again.
We would gratefully appreciate financial support from our wider community as we have had to fund our own solicitor to represent us at a formal Coronial inquest, so that improvements can be made to the highly dangerous vehicles that Waste Management are operating in our communities. Many thanks for your ongoing support and encouragement.
The funds will be used to fund a Solicitor and any other expenses related to the Coronial Inquest of the death of Carla Neems with the intention of making sensors mandatory on all waste trucks operating in NZ
Coroners Findings 31 July 2019
Just an update - the coroner’s recommendation that Waste Management trucks will be fitted with warning alarms to ensure drivers are aware of anyone who might enter a noted blind spot is a great win. Thank you all for your support - it has helped make a change and our communities and children will be safer because of it.
“As a family we are relieved that after perseverance and appointing legal counsel we now have a coroner’s recommendation that Waste Management must follow up on to keep our communities safe.
“We see this a great win after a huge financial and emotional investment, and one that would not have been necessary had WorkSafeNZ done their job completely.
The family wished “to acknowledge our supporters”.
“To them we say thank you for standing beside our family.”
