I have progressive Multiple Sclerosis. My neurologist advises that I receive Lemtrada, a drug not available in New Zealand.
The aim of Lemtrada is to prevent new lesions forming on my brain and spinal cord. Each new lesion causes another part of my body to fail.
The Lemtrada treatment involves a 5 day infusion and 12 months later, a 3 day infusion. There is the possibility of a further 3 day infusion 12 months after that.
An Australian neurologist can prescribe Lemtrada for me and I have an appointment booked with him in August 2017. The treatment will cost $100,000, as well as 2 (or 3) trips to receive the treatment.
There will be a variety of events held to raise the money, starting with my husband shaving off his coveted beard (coveted only by him may I add!). Please check the updates to see how we're getting on, and also any ideas for more epic events would be greatly appreciated.
I still want to enjoy adventures with my husband and children. Now I'm in a power wheelchair, it can sometimes be tricky to arrange, but we do our best. I don't want my disability to worsen and if Lamtrada can halt the progression, I can enjoy the family adventures that much longer.
Funds raised will be used to pay for the treatment, and cost of travel and accommodation in Australia while receiving the infusions.
