Ruby has been offered her dream internship in South Asia working on the issue of bonded-labour. Alas, it is unpaid so she needs your help!
Wellington
In 2019, Ruby will intern with the International Justice Mission (IJM) – the largest anti-slavery organisation in the world. She has been offered a position as a Legal and Research Intern in IJM's South Asia office.
Interning with IJM, Ruby will defend victims of bonded labour in India and seek justice on their behalf. Bonded labour is an oppressive form of slavery where, due to a debt or obligation, the labourer is deprived of their basic rights and freedoms. Physical, psychological and sexual abuse are common components of bonded labour making it a serious human rights crime.
Ruby is passionate about combatting slavery and has always dreamed of working in the international human rights field. Her role in the legal team will include research, managing documentation, writing briefs that will assist in rescuing and protecting victims, tracking client cases and participating in legal strategy meetings.
Ruby is excited to work for IJM because they have a proven plan for combatting slavery. IJM’s comprehensive model has rescued more than 45,000 people from slavery, rehabilitated survivors, assisted in the prosecution of thousands of slave owners and helped to strengthen domestic institutions. IJM protects the most vulnerable from violence and oppression irrespective of their gender, community, caste, race and ethnicity and proves that justice for the poor is possible.
To intern with IJM, Ruby needs to fund herself to travel to, and live in, India for 12 months. IJM recommends to budget between $16,000-$27,000 for annual expenses in Bangalore.
