Cook Islands SPCA

The Cook Islands SPCA is working to extend its services and presence across Rarotonga and the Cook Islands and is working towards establishing animal welfare legislation in partnership with Government Ministries. A Strategic Plan has developed to guide CISPCA to achieve the goals of the Plan.

Current services include maintaining a dog shelter on Rarotonga that can board up to 12 dogs, all of which, unless solely boarding, are re-homed to loving forever homes. CISPCA would like to extend this to having a separate puppy enclosure. None of the dogs are euthanized unless a vet recommends it. The Society maintains an Animal Ambulance for lost, stray or injured animals which are then taken to the local veterinary service for treatment where necessary.

The CISPCA has grown increasingly in the last 5 years with the construction of new kennels for dogs at the local veterinary clinic and a recent island-wide desexing programme whereby over 800 dogs were desexed and microchipped for free. A grant from Dogs Trust World Wide enabled us to do this.

CISPCA’s funding relies on income from an Opportunity Shop, sponsorship and donations. Funds go towards running the animal ambulance, managing the Shelter, de-sexing programmes and educational programmes to promote animal welfare.

Due to the growth mentioned above, we are increasingly needing more help and currently have 3 paid positions to cover the Shelter, Animal Ambulance and Op shop. Our committee are all volunteers and do as much as we can to assist our team and volunteers.

We are planning on having another desexing campaign which will also include cats. This, along with all our other areas of growth, means we appreciate and need all donations, which enable us to continue the great work we are doing in Rarotonga and the Cook Islands.
