Will you help us protect the beautiful Coromandel from the toxic gold mining industry?
Here in the Coromandel we know the stunning coastlines, native forest and rolling hills are precious. Unfortunately gold mining companies also think they are precious are and keen to get there hands on to the gold which lies in veins.
This fight to protect our lands, waters, local economy and community has been going on since the 1980's and has gone through different stages.
From the original boom in the '80s which saw nearly the whole peninsula covered in permits to a lull throughout the '90s and early 2000's, to today, where an unstable economic market is driving up interest in the 'Hauraki Gold Field'.
In recent hearings Watchdog has sorely felt the lack of up to date and local studies on the effects of underground mining and we wish to commission studies to prove the devastating effects underground mining can have on the environment and species (us included!) it hosts.
To building our organisation's fighting capacity and toolbox to keep the Coromandel the idyllic and relaxing place it is to live and visit.
We focus on building strong community groups, research, public education, political lobbying and direct action.
