The Govt has let a mining company buy NZ farmland to build a toxic dump! Gold mining and its toxic ways are our history, not our future!
Waikato
Our Government recently made a decision to allow Oceana Gold to buy 170+ha of farmland - with significant natural areas on it - to build another toxic tailings dump.
This application was initially declined by Minister from Lands, but the company reapplied and have now been granted it.
We believe that this action is in bad faith.
The Minister had solid and reasonable grounds for declining such an application - the loss of arable land to New Zealand indefinitely, the legacy of toxic material that we would be left with for future generations, and she also questioned how such a proposal would impact our climate, and how such a proposal should be considered under the new Carbon Zero Act.
If a tailings dump is built here, the land will be contaminated forever. Not only that, but it would enable Oceana to expand their mine, not only in Waihi but also into conservation and coastal areas on southern Hauraki, and even north of the Kopu HIkuai Coromandel Peninsula protection line!
The decision to approve the land purchase must be reviewed by the Courts - it is certainly not a good decision for a sustainable future.
This will be expensive, and we need you to get on board with us! We have a great lawyer, who is already being very generous with his time, and we are applying for funding; however, we will need you too!
Please, donate what you can, and share this page widely. All monies given here will go straight to this campaign (you can also donate to Watchdog in general, on our other Give a Little page or via our website).
All funds from this page will go toward the Judicial Review, paying our lawyer, engaging experts and filing fees.
Any extra funds will support our work on the Crown Minerals Act review 2020, also vital in protecting our area from mining!
Sad news.... 10 September 2020
We are sad to tell you that we have lost the Judicial Review in the High Court against Labour Ministers over the Oceana purchase of farmland at Waihi to build a new dam. The big guys won.
It was always a risk, but we are proud we challenged the Ministers for their decision and we are hugely grateful to all of you for your support, moral and financial.
We have a long and proud history of protecting the beautiful Hauraki Coromandel, it's always been a 'David and Goliath' situation, our communities against the mega rich miners. As disappointing as this loss is, we will continue to work to keep this toxic industry out!
So again, from us all at Coromandel Watchdog, thank you for your support! Please, keep in touch with what we are doing - this ain't over yet!
Augusta and the whole Watchdog Team.
