I'm headed to Detroit, USA for a conference to share my knowledge as an ambassador of Christchurch's cycling scene.
Canterbury
I'm founder of the social group cycleCHCH and one of the volunteers at RAD Bikes. I have experience hosting workshops like Wheel Womyn Wednesdays (running for months now!) and a passion for community and inclusivity.
I will be facilitating two workshops at the Bike!Bike! conference: including starting a non-profit bike shed post-quake, how to run a environmentally-friendly shed, and what it's like being in an inclusive, diverse environment of volunteers. I want to bring back all learnings from other non-profit bike co-ops around the world to Christchurch so we can continue to grow our cycling city into a world-class bike city. Come hear more at Bikeyface Soapbox event during FESTA in October!
Travel is the biggest cost I've incurred and am raising money to help me offset those costs. Any additional money donated above and beyond the goal will go directly to RAD Bikes, a local bike shed operating in The Commons.
This trip is one of many steps on a long journey to my dream of owning NZ's first female-owned and operated bike shop and how I think I can create a more diverse and inclusive cycling community.
I have volunteered for RAD Bikes since the day I arrived in Christchurch and have been hooked ever since. I've made countless friends and an extended family this way and it's showed me that bike maintenance and repair isn't scary.
Detroit happens to be Motor City, USA and I think Christchurch can learn a lot from a city so effected by a declining automobile industry and vice versa.
I read a statistic (from Census 2013) that there are NO employed female mechanics in New Zealand. I think this can change. I want to encourage more people, male and female, to ride, fix and enjoy their bikes again.

Thank you to everyone who supported my journey. This weekend, during FESTA, I will be sharing more of the learnings and outcomes from the conference. Please come by and win some prizes! https://www.facebook.com/events/597330953785583/
