Cycling Without Age at the Selwyn Village

This project aims to establish a chapter of Cycling Without Age at the Selwyn Village Retirement Complex in Point Chevalier.

Cycling Without Age is an international programme designed to share the joy and sociability of cycling with elderly people, by using electric trishaw bicycles pedalled by volunteer pilots. Each bike accommodates two passengers side by side, who can chat as they explore their neighbourhood and experience the delight of ‘the wind in their hair.’

A Cycling Without Age chapter at Selwyn Village will improve the daily quality of life of 700 residents, especially those whose mobility or health is limited, through more diverse personal connections and activities, as well as access to fresh air. Residents will be able to travel along the area’s cycleways and boardwalks (both new and planned) to visit local destinations like parks, cafes, the waterfront, town centre and public library. Moreover, the programme will connect residents with community volunteers of all ages.

As the Selwyn Foundation puts all operating profits from its villages into its charitable mission of providing affordable housing and care for tenants facing financial hardship, there is little remaining for activities and social programmes.
