Please help me carry out essential work on a dam , so that it can safely continue to provide habitat for aquatic wildlife and waterfowl.
Nelson / Tasman
The dam at no.7 is in need of repairs and maintenance to keep it safe. Otherwise it will need to be decommissioned, drained. That would be sad as the large pond is home to longfinned eels and native fish such as the banded kokopu, and a haven for ducks and occasional shag and kotoku visitor. The wetland, where the dam drains, is home to frogs, weka anad pukeko.
Works: 1. lowering the spillway and making access to overflow pipe and dam tap 2. Examining and repairing blocked overflow pipe and seized dam tap 3. removing trees from dam bank 4. Restoring bank contour after tree root removal 5. Restoring water outflow route to reconnect with channels leading off of the property 6. Restoring and improving dam surroundings. Addressing run off causing erosion, killing weeds, replanting native bush where pine's removed to improve habitat.
Money raised will be used for works 1 through to 6. Step 3 requires step 4 for maintenance of dam stability. If insufficient for all steps is raised I will do as much as I can to preserve habitat. Excess for further habitat enhancement.
Stage 1, the beginning 19 May 2019
So far I have spoken to Richard Greatrex, consulting engineer, who has recommended two contractors with the kinds of experience needed. Robbie, from Taylors contracting -specialists in dams and forestry, has given a quote for stage 1. That includes lowering the spillway to prevent the dam bank from overflowing , and clearing access to the overflow pipe and dam tap. Just over NZ$3000.
