Using our hikoi to support and fund-raise for Donna Doolittle's Animal Rescue.
Northland
When I decided to take on the challenge of walking Te Araroa, with my 10 year old daughter Olive, I also wanted to highlight and help fund-raise for our local Animal Rescue Centre, run by Donna Badorek. Donna is a vet nurse, mum, and an all round excellent human being.
Why Donna?
I have been fortunate enough to have led a life filled with animals. My first dog as a young independent adult, was a rescue dog called Jacko. He was the one nobody wanted, and he became my best-friend. Animals continue to open my heart in surprising ways, and I couldn't imagine my life without them.
Here's a few words from Donna herself...'I started the rescue because I was working at the vet clinic as a veterinary nurse and was horrified at the amount of animals that were coming through the doors destined for euthanasia. These animals were either dumped, neglected, strays and in some instances owner surrendered for various reasons. I couldn’t let this happen, so I opened up my doors to accommodate these animals...I dedicate everyday of my life to making sure I am there for these innocent animals, I am their voice when they can’t speak, I make sure I find homes that will be their forever homes that they deserve. It’s an exhausting, emotional, financially challenging role to play in the community but I have such a passion for what I do it keeps me strong along with the amazing community that supports what I do'.
Donna is currently fund-raising for a laptop and new shelving area for the rescue, so every little bit helps.
Thank you for supporting my hikoi by contributing to this fund-raiser.
Peace and love, Rachel & Olive.
