Don't let cancer take our Papa yet!

Kauwhata is a loving father to 4 children (Jamahl-18, Luna-4, Amika-3, & Eden-11months). Two weeks ago Kau was diagnosed with aggressive, stage 4, terminal bowel cancer that has spread along his abdominal wall. We were told surgery is not an option and all treatment from here on is palliative as his cancer is untreatable and incurable. At only 34 years old and with such a young family this news is a tragedy!

Without any treatment Kau has been told he has 3-6 months left to live. With chemotherapy, his oncologist says he could have up to 18 months added to his life.

The news of Kau's terminal cancer and estimated time frame was the biggest bomb shell that could be dropped on such a young family. Kau's bowel surgeon informed us that his cancer has come back aggressively, it has spread and is spreading further with a rapid pace. Kau was first diagnosed with bowel cancer 6 months ago but treatment had to cease when he reacted badly to Capecitabine; he experienced heart complications mimicking a heart attack and cardiac dysfunction.

With the reoccurrence and severity of the cancer, his oncologist recommends the chemotherapy drug Raltitrexed to replace Capecitabine. However Raltitrexed isn’t funded here in New Zealand - it would cost approximately $35,000 for a full course.

Kau would also like to partake in other complementary treatments such as Vitamin C infusions (~$200 per weekly dose), Salvestrol Platinum (~$150 per week), other supplements (such as organic foods and multivitamins) and natural treatments (e.g. sweat therapy, use of pool for gentle exercise, etc). These treatments that he is interested in have been scientifically proven to help cancer patients and are endorsed by his oncologist.

We want Kau to be around for as long as possible and also to have the best quality of life as possible while he is here. There are so many memories still to be made with his children and family before this cancer robs his life. There are still so many experiences he longs to have with them and treasured moments to be had!

We are asking for help to get him the chemotherapy that will extend the time he has left, fund complementary treatments, and allow him to create treasured memories with his family.

Anyone that knows Kau knows how much of a passionate, positive and loved man he is. Kau is extremely close to all his children. Each one he has a deep bond with and each of them considers him their best friend and loves him beyond measure.
