Dr Dave swims: to personally challenge body and mind and support kids and teenagers with dyslexia and learning disabilities.
Tokoroa, Waikato
We all face challenges in our lives, and I have faced quite a few. I take on things where I will be forced to learn and come out the other end a better person. The fear of failure grips us all, but I have learned to embrace it and keep pushing forward. On the 7th Feb 2025, I will be attempting the 28km Foveaux Strait (Rakiura Steward Island to Bluff), renowned for cold waters, unpredictable weather, strong currents and sharks! Success here will see me complete the NZ marathon swimming Triple Crown (Length of Lake Taupo, Cook Strait & Foveaux Strait), I then intend to pursue the Ocean Seven. I am swimming in support of Dyslexia and Dyslexia Foundation New Zealand.
The main driver for this swim is to support those who face challenges with dyslexia and learning disabilities. Once I have covered costs for the swim I will donate the remainder to those who require a much-needed 'step-up' with learning support to get them on track to achieve great things in their own lives.
We all can learn and gain a well-rounded education, but experience has taught me that the real challenge is discovering how we each learn best. We simply learn differently and that is fine! The path to achievement is individual and we just need to find our path! Dr Dave swims main aim is to use marathon swimming as a platform to help others who have also been challenged by dyslexia and learning disabilities to provide support for initiatives to get others established on their own path in life!
I personally suffered from dyslexia and learning disabilities and have built a relationship with DFNZ around how I have been advocating for dyslexia and learning support awareness through my Dr Dave swims platform.
To cover the costs of the swim and to provide learning resources, achievement trophies, learning support tutoring, reader-writers for exams, and teacher aids through Dyslexia Foundation NZ. Support will be provided at a grass-roots level.

Hi all, I just want to say thank you so much for the support, messages, and interest in the Dr. Dave Swims project. The givealittle page is doing so well and we will now have the capacity to support some neat ''grass-roots'' learning and educational initiatives. The page has 3-days to run and the more we can raise the more we can support! Can you please spread wide & far so we can maximise! Really appreciated, have a great day, regards Dr Dave Edgar
