The Centre for Environmental Justice is a home for people fighting for environmental justice in the Manawatu-Whanganui region, and NZ.

Manawatu / Whanganui

The Centre for Environmental Justice is a home for people fighting for environmental justice in the Manawatu-Whanganui region, and New Zealand. Through science, policy and advocacy, we aim to expose environmental injustice, confront privilege and power structures that are or have been unjust and, where harm to people and place has been done, ask those responsible for it to take responsibility.

You can read more about who we are, and the Centre's priorities and plans, on our webpage at www.ecojustice.nz.

Our voice is for all of society, not a select few; for the natural world, that has as much right for existence as anyone; and for future generations.

Your support for us in this start-up phase will cover basic start-up costs, and the cost of the considerable time involved to make sure that the Centre is well set up and securely funded, to be able to continue. There is a lot to do to establish the Centre and turn it into more than a good idea, and we can't do it without your help.

Our main cost is the investment of time, to get things right. We have been able to keep basic start-up costs and overheads to a minimum, and this will continue. Your donation will help to recover those initial costs, and help us to take the next steps forward. Currently, we have no other means of support.

One of our first priorities is to formally establish the Centre for Environmental Justice as a not-for-profit registered charity, that is working for charitable purposes; and to find secure long-term funding sources.

However, please note: we are not currently a registered charity, there is a process to go through first.

Great news  12 December 2016

To those who have supported the Centre for Environmental Justice in its first baby steps on the journey - again, whakawhetai koe, thank you. I'm so excited to write to you and let you know that, behind the scenes, things have been happening, and we have great news.

The Law Foundation has said 'yes' to a grant application for 2017, which will pay for some time to research and write about environmental and eco-justice in New Zealand. The funding is for a short book that explains the ideas, looks at NZ's legal framework to deliver justice, and is an argument for seeing things as a bit more inclusive and interconnected: there are a lot of faces to justice, but the values are simple and universal.

This will become the first flagship piece of work for the Centre, and I am so grateful for the confidence and support of the Law Foundation in their decision.

Having this kind of external support helps us as we move to become more formally established. I'm looking forward to doing everything that I can personally to live up to expectations, and making the most of the opportunity we've been given in 2017.

I wish you all the best for the holidays, and a peaceful new year.

Meanwhile, if you would like to continue to support us through this page - please do. Donations continue to be welcome, and so far have meant that we can cover expenses - every one is a vote of confidence, which means a lot. And there are more plans hatching!

Aroha nui

Claire
