I had cancer destroy my fertility but I am not eligible for funding.
Wellington
When I was 15 years old I was diagnosed with Advanced Stage 4B Hodgkin's lymphoma. I am now 22 and have just been told that due to my chemotherapy I received as a child I have a 15-20% chance of conceiving a baby naturally and this chance will continue to decrease as I get older, I may lose all chances by the time I'm in my mid 20's.
As I am not currently in a relationship, nor am I ready to have a family now,I have been advised to freeze my eggs before June 2020 and keep them frozen until I am ready to have my own family.
However I'm now in a predicament of the fact I am not eligible for any funding towards this procedure, even though I had cancer treatment that effects fertility. The reason behind this is because the procedure is only funded immediately prior to treatment commencing but I was not given this option as they didn't have the spare time as I was immensely close to death and needed chemotherapy as soon as possible.
The procedure is $9500 for the first batch and then if not enough are gathered the second batch is $7800 and $6800 for the third (if these are done within a certain time frame of the first). I am a full time nursing student with a part time job so I am unable to gather the funds myself within such a tight time frame.
All funds raised will go towards my procedure(s) and there after the yearly fee to keep my eggs frozen until I am ready.
