To help support Kirstie and the kids spend as much time with Elton at Burwood through his rehab journey.
Manawatu / Whanganui
On the 2nd of March 2020 my amazing brother, and pillar of the Mayo family, Elton had a terrible accident resulting in a life changing spinal injury, turning his, Kirstie, Olivia, Charlie and Hannah's lives upside down.
Elton’s accident will leave him paralysed from the chest down. Elton is in the ICU at Christchurch hospital in an induced coma and currently unaware of his situation. After several weeks in the ICU and once stabilised, he will be transferred to Burwood in Christchurch where he will begin his long rehab journey. Elton's relationship with Burwood may be up to 2 years. As you can imagine, all Elton, Kirstie and the kids will want is to be together throughout this difficult time as they come to terms with what this means for them.
So many people are reaching out to help in some way. The purpose of this give a little page is to provide a means for those who have reached out to do so. Please leave a message for Elton that he will pick up in due course, so that he is aware of this amazing support around him. For anyone who wanted to contribute to this page, this will help fund Kirstie and the kids travel to and from Christchurch, enabling them to spend as much time as they can with Elton through this period away from home. This will also help in a small part ease the financial burden ahead for Elton and Kirstie as they adjust to their new lives.
Thank you so much for all of the support during this difficult time.
I am Elton's younger brother.
To help support Kirstie and the kids travel and accommodation costs to and from Christchurch.
Update 19 August 19 August 2020
Hi all,
Just wanting to give you a final update before closing this page. Firstly, keen to pass on another thanks for your valued support throughout our journey. Your kindness and generosity has been very much appreciated. We are thankful for all the visitors from the north and south who have spent time with Elton, Kirstie and family over the past few months. We have loved catching up with you all. We can’t thank everybody enough for their individual ways they have contributed to our family. Every person has chosen their own way of supporting us and we appreciate you all. We have been blown away by the thoughtfulness of what you have chosen to do for us.
I’ve recently gone through a nerve transfer operation to hopefully allow my fingers to open and close (up to 6 months to see results) with two more operations scheduled over the next 12-18 months to hopefully increase hand function. I continue to work daily with my physio and OT to build strength and work around some of my physical shortcomings. The team at Burwood have been absolutely outstanding aiding me in my recovery. As my time at Burwood is drawing to an end we will now be closing this page, but are only too happy for you to message us personally regarding any updates.
Thanks again, we couldn’t have done it without you.
Elton, Kirstie, Olivia, Charlie and Hannah.
