Bridge for Whitebait Spawning Habitat Restoration in Waikato
Raise funds for a bridge to allow access for the public to be educated about the importance and methods of restoring & maintaining wetlands

We have undertaken a project that has restored a once stagnant and dying tributary of the Waikato River to a fast flowing vibrant stream. Creating dozens of spawning ponds for whitebait and restoring the habitat for the rare Bittern and Fernbirds to live and breed. We have planted approximately 40,000 wetland plants and established a pest eradication programme covering over 400 hectares targeting mustelids, possums and rats. With support from local iwi and schools we would like to open our work to the wider community, particularly focusing on schools within the wider Auckland and Waikato region. At the moment there is no direct connectivity between the sites and a bridge would not only help in our ongoing endeavours but give the public a greater learning experience.

My children are 6th generation on this farm and we believe that they should at least be able to swim in the streams their ancestors drank from. As we are aware of the diminished state of our nation's wetland areas we have undertaken a major restoration project that is having a positive ripple affect amongst other landowners in our region. We share our knowledge and work with numerous community groups, individuals, councils, iwi and schools.
Without a bridge a vital link is missing between the sites. Education is the key to changing behaviour and appreciating the diversity of our endangered flora and fauna.

Trees that Count 4 July 2019
Another 6000 trees being planted thanks to trees that count plus the restoration of Motukakaho a 200 acre island in the Waikato river delta. Home to rare wetland birds and whitebait spawning habitat.
