Fiona is battling cancer and has had a recent leg amputation - she needs help making her home wheelchair friendly.
Auckland
Back in March of this year, Fiona was diagnosed with gastric cancer. While undergoing chemotherapy, she had complications with a blood clot resulting in her left leg needing to be amputated below the knee.
As she will soon be returning to chemotherapy, she will be in a wheelchair for the foreseeable future. Unfortunately, her home where she lives with her parents Elsie and Robin and her youngest daughter Sarah is not wheelchair friendly at all.
While we're lucky to have all her chemo treatment covered by the public health system, the funding for house modifications to make it more accessible is hard to come by as it doesn't fall under ACC.
She has been approved for a temporary ramp to get in and out of the house, but movement within the house, especially to the bathrooms and bedrooms is impossible without some changes.
As a family, we are putting together what we can, but we're going to need a lot of help to cover the costs. Anything that can be contributed will be a massive help and very appreciated.
Fiona is fighting hard and despite all the obstacles she has come up against so far, she is still full of hope and optimism. Being able to have her home and able to move around freely is going to help her with this fight.
I'm Fiona's eldest daughter, Katie.
All funds raised will go towards the cost of:
- Building a permanent ramp
- Concreting the front around around the ramp
- Widening doorways within the house so she can get around freely in her wheelchair
- Replacing the front door to one that Fiona can open without assistance
- Possibly replacing toilet/shower etc if needed to make them wheelchair friendly.
- Smaller things like moving light switches to make them accessible
Home and happy! 15 August 2017
Mum has been home for a couple of weeks now and is settling well. She's been slowly getting her stitches removed on her leg which has been quite sore for her but she's such a trooper.
Yesterday her and I went out to go to two different doctors appointments she had and managed to fit in lunch and shopping in between. Despite needing a gastric feeding tube only 2 months ago, she's back to eating real food - so we chowed down on her current favourite yesterday - pork dumplings! Shopping was also a success, with mum finding 3 new gorgeous tops to wear. Two of them match her beautiful scarf!
Thank you again to all our wonderful supporters. Between the generous donations you've provided and the practical advice given to us about how best to build the ramp (and the cheapest way to get materials), you've all help to make this so much easier for us and we can't express our gratitude enough.
Thanks Mark :)
