Let's sponsor Bopha Sok's daughter, Lyheng, to attend the Australian Centre for Education (ACE) Siem Reap Campus.
Auckland
Bopha and his family remain truly grateful for the generosity shown by his global network of friends in 2020 when, together, we helped him out of a very tight spot: https://givealittle.co.nz/cause/save-bophas-home. Some of us wanted to see how we can help them in 2022.
Update since our 2020 fundraising:
Close to losing their home, he had tried to find other ways to earn an income, including construction, which proved very dangerous and too greater risk to his wellbeing and life. As a direct result of our collective effort, Bopha has been able to keep the family home. They have, however, rented it out for the time being and are living in a village with extended family.
Tourists can now travel to Cambodia and Bopha is seeing some increase in visitor numbers to Siem Reap although it is hard to know how long it will take for it to return to what it was. G Adventures have one guide working again but Bopha was one of several who were made redundant and don't know whether the company will need them again. He wants to buy his own tuk-tuk and operate as an independent guide for visits to Angkor Wat.
How can we help in 2022?
We offered to help fundraise for a tuk-tuk but what would provide Bopha the greatest comfort would be to know that, regardless of how long it takes for him to generate more income, his eldest daughter, Lyheng, will be able to attend the Australian Centre for Education (ACE) Siem Reap Campus to recommence her English language studies (https://acecambodia.org/).
I met Bopha Sok in 2013 when he was a guide for a tour I had of Cambodia and Vietnam. His personality and big heart enabled our group, like many others, to share a wonderful travel experience and many of us have stayed in touch with Bopha ever since.
Funds raised by this campaign will sponsor Bopha Sok's daughter to attend the Australian Centre for Education (ACE) Siem Reap Campus.
A message of thanks from Bopha to everyone who supported him 8 September 2022
Dear beloved friends,
I have received the funds raised by all of you to help support me with putting my children into a good school.
My daughter, Lyheng, has begun attending and is enjoying it very much. She is excited to start her next class at ACE in September. Classes last for 1.5 hours per day and she has homework to complete.
She started at a higher level than we had expected due to having made good progress with her previous studies. One term (75 hours) costs $260 USD and she attends five days each week.
My son, Manrong, started in June and his classes are also 1.5 hours daily. One term (75 hours) costs $250 USD. Thank you so much to Mike Evans for sponsoring Manrong. It will change his life and ours forever.
On behalf of my kids I would like to say billion thank you to all friends from over the world that you always showed love and helped me in the hard times. I am super appreciative for your kindness and support. You have helped ensure a better future for my family.
Big big huge thanks to Cliff Magon for his help with setting up the fund raising - thanks mate.
Also a big big huge thanks to Mike Evans for his generous sponsorship of Manrong. He is super-happy that he too has chance to start English classes.
At the end, my family and I would like to wish you all happiness and health in life.
Love you all long long time!
❤️
Bopha and family.
