Maata needs to be permanently on oxygen. Help to buy a portable oxygen tank so she can travel and doesn't have to be confined to home.
Taranaki
As many of you will know, Maata Wharehoka is the Kaitiaki of Te Niho o Te Atiawa at Parihaka, a generous and fierce woman of many talents, and a pou (pillar) of the Taranaki community.
After many years of ailing health and trouble with her lungs, Maata has now been put on permanent oxygen. This means that she needs to be connected to an oxygen tank for 16 hours of every day. At the moment, she is hooked up to a 25kg oxygen tank, which means that she needs to be at home 16 hours of each day, and is no longer able to travel outside of Taranaki or to fly anywhere.
For anyone that knows Maata, this is a huge change of lifestyle, and for many of us around Aotearoa and the world, a true loss for Maata to no longer be able to travel.
However, there is another option and we ask for your help! For around $6,000 Maata can have a 2.5kg oxygen machine/tank. This will allow her to be away from home for longer periods of time, to travel outside of Taranaki and to take her oxygen on aircraft.
Any contribution you can make will help get Maata mobile again, and would be greatly appreciated.
Maata Wharehoka is a dear friend of mine and my wife Amanda's, and is a pou of the Taranaki community. Maata has provided us with much love and support in the years that we have known her, as she has for many people across New Zealand.
The funds will be to purchase the Inogen One G5 Portable Oxygen Concentrator, valued at approximately $6,000. Any funds raised above that amount will be applied to the machine's ongoing running costs, and then to assist with other health costs and support.
