Here is our opportunity to help one of our own geothermal community who has so much potential and so much in need.
Auckland
Getenesh Hailegiorgis Abebe is a young geophysicist working for the Geological Survey of Ethiopia who recently completed a MSc study in Iceland. She is regarded an upcoming shining light for the future of geothermal development in Ethiopia.
About 2 weeks ago Getenesh was severely injured in a terrible bus accident in her home country of Ethiopia. It is believed the bus driver fell asleep and the bus rolled, causing injuries to everyone on board.
According to her sister, "most" of her bones are broken, including her back, spinal cord, chest, hips, and arms. She had blood in her lungs and was in a coma for some time, but she has now awoken from the coma but needs another surgery.
Her family, friends, and colleagues contacted the Iceland GTP asking for assistance as she needs surgery urgently as well as medical care to recover but they are not able to cover the cost and get her all the help she needs. The situation in Ethiopia is very tough at the moment and she is not able to see visitors at the public hospital due to the COVID pandemic. It is a very tough time for her and her family.
Málfríður Ómarsdóttir at the UNESCO Geothermal Training Program is coordinating with the family and already transferring funds (Euro 1400 send by 22nd Oct). But Getenesh will need much more so we are assisting via NZ WING to collect and transfer funds to Getenesh via Fríður.
The funds will be passed to Málfríður Ómarsdóttir the representative of the UNESCO training program in Iceland who is the primary contact for the recipients family.
Getenesh is a young geophysicist who has specialized in MT resistivity and is a leading light for the future of geothermal development in Ethiopia. As a colleague, and with Ethiopia having a special place in my heart, I want to support her recovery.
The family hope to investigate potential for private hospital care for continuing intensive care and restorative survey and follow up physiotherapy. It will be a long path.
$7141 raised Thank YOU! 31 October 2020
The fund raise page raised NZ$7141 which is close to US$5000.
We will send the funds over to Genesh this week so her sister can plan the approach to hospital care.
We believe that in total with Iceland team we have at least US$15,000 raised so I really hope that makes a difference. Thanks to you all, you are awesome.
