This very special boy once saved is dad from a house fire. Now he needs help to get home to his parents in NZ!

This is Tjokker, a beautiful, happy and very busy doggo currently living in South Africa. Tjokker is a German Shorthaired Pointer with a very special soul and quite a unique story. When he was only 10 months old he escaped from the yard and ended up in front of a van on a busy road. Tjokker was lucky to be alive. His pelvis had been broken in three places and his bladder was torn. He had to have extensive surgery to repair the damage and put together his pelvis with screws and metal rods.

With his naturally high energy levels, the months of rehabilitation that followed was hell for our boy. But he made it through and today is as happy and healthy as he ever was!

In 2018, Tjokker had another brush with death. My husband woke up in the middle of the night to Tjokker standing next to our bed incessantly barking. My husband realised something was wrong, because Tjokker was in a total panic. When he opened the bedroom door, the rest of the house was already engulfed in flames. He scrambled to get the sliding door in the bedroom open and him and Tjokker managed to get out of the house just in time.

In November last year, my husband and I moved to New Zealand. As soon as we arrived we started the lengthy and costly process of bringing Tjokker to New Zealand. Before we were even halfway through, the coronavirus pandemic hit and everything changed.

My husband is self-employed and works directly with international clients from all over the world. When all the flights ground to a halt, so did his job. I work for the media who has come under extreme pressure due to the pandemic and as a result I’ve had to take a pay cut.

Suddenly we are down to one salary until at least next year and on top of that, that one salary has been reduced. This has put us in a very difficult position where we are unable to afford the very expensive process of bringing Tjokker to New Zealand.

To us there is no question - Tjokker will join us in New Zealand even if it means we have to save every spare cent for as long as it takes to make this happen. He is a part of our family and we will never leave him behind. Tjokker literally saved my husband’s life and there is nothing we wouldn’t do for him.

But the longer it takes, the longer we have to be apart from him which is simply heartbreaking. My husband was due to go back to South Africa and to Tjokker in May, but that is no longer a possibility. Every single day we wonder what Tjokker is thinking and if he thinks we abandoned him. It breaks our hearts!

We would give anything to be reunited with our boy. Any donation would help so much and just push us a little closer to getting our Tjokker back with us where he belongs. I appreciate you taking the time to read Tjokker’s story and consider donating!

Blood tests done!  7 July 2020

Posted by: Mariné Lourens

Hi everyone. This brave little guy went for his blood tests today and he was a total champ about it! Didn't even try to escape from the vet's table once. Of course his good behaviour earned him all his favourite snacks from Grandma!

Tjokker gets spoiled way too much at his grandma and grandpa's house, but I have to admit - it is hard to say no to that face!

Now we have to wait for the results of the blood tests. The vet says these usually take about three weeks, but with the Covid-19 backlog at the laboratory, it will likely take much longer now. We might even have to wait up to three months.

That's ok since we are still waiting for flights to become available too. No updates on that front just yet!

We'll keep you updated as soon as we have news. For now we are keeping positive and continue to trust that everything will fall into place so we can reunite with our handsome boy!

Sending love from NZ. x
