Girls Rock! Camp is a holiday programme for young women where music is the medium to build confidence, empowerment and foster social change

Auckland

Girls Rock! Camp is a week-long holiday programme for young women* to be held in January 2019 where music is the medium to build confidence, empowerment and foster social change. Campers between the ages of 12-17 years will form bands, learn instruments, attend workshops and write an original song to be performed at a concert for friends and family at the end of camp.

The kaupapa of Girls Rock Camp! Aotearoa is to create the world we want to live in - a more equal and inspiring place. We are a non-profit organisation made up of musicians and music lovers with years of music industry experience. We are committed to guiding the advancement and empowerment of young women- but we need your help!

The objectives of GRC!A

- To help young women build confidence and practical skills in songwriting and music through tutoring and practice

- To utilise the talent of local songwriters and music-makers to help mentor and guide participants

- To educate young people through talks and collaborative workshops on songwriting, design, feminism and music history

- To support and promote the presence of women, trans and gender non-conforming youth in music

The inaugural five-day Girls Rock! Camp Aotearoa was held at MAINZ in Auckland for young women aged 12-17 years old in January 2018 and was hugely successful. We are supported by Recorded Music New Zealand, the New Zealand Music Commission, MAINZ and Auckland Council but as a non-profit organisation we have ongoing costs and need the support of the public to help us achieve our goals of encouraging young women into music.

Your donation will go toward crucial costs such as equipment hire and tutor fees to ensure we get the best tutors and put on a high-quality programme as well as allowing us to offer scholarships to ensure the programme is as accessible as possible. Donations also give us the opportunity to offer free scholarship placements to participants from low-income families, keeping the programme as accessible as possible. Your generosity will help provide young women, trans and gender non-conforming youth the chance to create, learn and grow, and make some noise!

Girls Rock! Camp Aotearoa is registered with the New Zealand Companies Office as an Incorporated Society.

*"Young Women” includes female, transgender, intersex and non-binary youth.
