Help two university students create an incredible short film telling a story about an insecurity that lives inside us all.
Auckland
Hello! We are Jesse Ung (writer/director) and Juliette Tubby (producer). We are filmmakers in our third and final year of university and are making this film - titled "GRIND" as part of our final year project.
"GRIND" is a story of anxiety and insecurity run rampant as an underweight, insecure but stubborn young gay man named Kaleb obtains a gym membership and hires a personal trainer to improve his physique. Although initially unsuccessful in negotiating the labyrinth of exercise machines and intimidating body masses, with the help of his patient personal trainer named Travis, Kaleb overcomes his nerves and finds a strength within himself that he never knew he had.
This story is very special to us, and very personal to me as the writer/director. Male body image issues are way more pervasive in our culture than most people think (especially amongst queer men), and while this is not a film with any particular message, I want to shed light on how this affects young men in an insightful way. Films never capture the nervousness and isolation a person feels walking into a gym for the first time, and we want to capture this in an honest way. I think whether you have ever experienced insecurity regarding the way you look or not, the struggle of finding inner strength is very relatable.
Grind will be filmed from September 6th to September 8th, 2018, with post-production beginning as early as September 9th, for completion before October 12th.
We need your support in order to make this film the best that it can be. Whether that is through pledging, a little or a lot, or simply sharing this page with anyone and everyone you know, you will be helping us get one step further to our goal.
Your pledge, small or large, will help us to pay and feed our hardworking and talented cast, provide koha to our locations for accomodating us, transport for our cast as well as covering fees to submit the finished film to festivals.
Funds will cover the expenses of filming in a gym, the costs of hiring actors, equipment and crew, as well as the fees for submitting this short film to various festivals.
First screening of the film 5 November 2018
I am very pleased to announce that after months of hard work, Grind has been selected to be screened at AUT's Flavourz Film Festival on November 10th. This is your opportunity to be the first to see it on the big screen.
